My first month at Lavanda as an engineer
Oct 29, 2021
Hi, my name is Victor Guerra and I’ve been a software developer for more than 6 years now. I love Ruby and Golang.
In this post, I’m going to tell you about my first month here at Lavanda.
How everything started
I’m Brazilian and I live in Portugal (for about 3 years now). During these years, I was working for a consultancy company.
This June, I was reached by some recruiter about a position in a UK startup, a great career opportunity, great product, e.t.c.... You know, we receive these kind of messages every day. I was in a good mood, so I replied and later thought to myself: “future Victor, you are going to regret this”.
To my surprise, the first interview, with the Head of Engineering, was great. He explained about the product, the company mindset, and the daily workflow. So, I managed to progress to the next phases and I was getting super excited about the opportunity and the possibility of working with, first impression, great people. And… I was eventually made an offer and accepted!
My first day
I’ve given two months' notice. Ahh, waiting to start! I was super anxious and also thinking about the first weeks in a new job, that boring onboarding process, etc.
The day finally came, my first day.
Super warm welcome, and after the daily standup, Panos (the Principal Engineer, aka the Professor in a mention of one of his favourite TV shows) and I started pairing and to my surprise, I was already developing a feature!!!. By the end of the day, I had created some Pull Requests and deployed to production!
The first month
The onboarding process was nothing that I'd ever thought: I started working from day one, and that is awesome! My abilities are tested every single day.
The days were passing, I was feeling more and more confident to discuss new implementations, improvements, and also, to make some jokes :D
The TEAM made me feel that way! We’re increasing the team size and the new people fit in that Lavanda way. I’m pretty sure that we’ll never lose it.
I’m extremely excited for the days, months and years to come here at Lavanda. I’ve never been in a team so united and with the willingness to make the product even better. They are always looking for the best implementation. This is really amazing!!
The past Victor was so (so!) wrong. I don’t regret my answer. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
