Airbnb’s adult user base to fall by 60% in 2020

Sep 17, 2020

There’s been a lot of speculation around how the pandemic will impact Airbnb’s user base in 2020.

eMarketer has now published data indicating that Airbnb’s base of adult users will in fact decline by as much as 60% in 2020 to just 17 million users. Whilst this appears entirely representative of the broader US home sharing industry (see images below), eMarketer has shone a light on a number of interesting data points and insights:

  • Airbnb remains the dominant homesharing platform with 73% of users in 2020.

  • Despite a steep decline due to the pandemic, Airbnb is expected to outperform as its inventory better serves current market trends (drive-to destinations, and a preference for private STR accommodation vs. hotels).

  • Airbnb will likely recover to pre-pandemic levels in 2021.

  • Airbnb market share will likely drop to <70% in 2022 due to increased competition.
